On February 24th and 25th 2005, the Center on Ethics hosted a conference on the subject of Moral Leadership. This event marked the official launch of the Center and brought together some of the nation’s preeminent scholars from diverse disciplinary backgrounds. The conference was cosponsored by the Center for Leadership Development and Research at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, the Center for Public Leadership at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard’s Safra Foundation Center for Ethics, and Princeton’s University Center for Human Values.
Panel topics includeded:
Serving the Public Through the Public Sector: Accountability of Non-Profit Organizations
Self Sacrifice and Self Interest
Ethical Judgment
Psychology of Power
Moral Leadership in International Contexts
Moral Leadership in the University
A companion conference was also held at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard on March 10-11th. The aim of both events was to bring together leading researchers from the fields of psychology, leadership, law, philosophy, sociology, and business ethics to discuss a topic that is of crucial social importance, but one that has, to date, attracted insufficient serious scholarship.
A selection of papers from both conferences was published:
Deborah L. Rhode, ed., Moral Leadership: The Theory and Practice of Power, Judgement, and Policy (San Francisco: Jossey-Bass, 2006).
