"Addressing Bias in America’s Criminal Justice System: Predictive Algorithms, Recidivism, and the Ethical Standards of Judgeship"

Mac is primarily concerned with the intersection of law, ethics and justice systems. She seeks to study algorithmic bias in the criminal justice system (emphasizing the COMPAS algorithm) to evaluate the role of recidivism in sentencing procedure, alongside the interaction of artificial and human bias in court. She hopes to challenge aspects of American judgeship — the standards individual judges hold themselves to, the federal canons binding them, the tools provided for sentencing guidance, and the ethicality of unique judicial decision making. This project matters because it analyzes judicial decision making critically, applying ethical attention to key actors in the judicial system.
