"Digital Discourse: Updating our Understanding of the Public Sphere for the Social Media Era"

Madeline's thesis seeks to understand how our current normative frameworks for the democratic public sphere do not rise to the challenges that the online public sphere poses to democratic societies. These challenges — misinformation, violent extremism, echo chambers, etc. — are not anticipated by any constitution or statute, and yet are increasingly implicated in the fabric of democratic societies. Using normative and political theory, Madeline will investigate which structural conditions of healthy democracies are compromised by the digital public sphere, and ultimately argue that we must update our frameworks for the public sphere in order to rise to these contemporary challenges.
