Ethics@noon: Jan Krawit (Art & Art History) "Treading Softly: Ethical Concerns in Documentary Films"

In some cultures, there persists a belief that to take one's picture is to steal one's soul. In the world of documentary film, there is sometimes the palpable theft of a subject's dignity and the manipulation of the "truth" of a situation. Since its inception, documentary film has been subject to legitimate and intractable ethical challenges that emerge when working with real people in real situations. Using clips from a range of nonfiction films, this talk will consider the responsibility of the documentary filmmaker to her subjects and her audience.
