Jeff Raikes: Wealth, Philanthropy, and Inequality

Jeff Raikes, CEO of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and co-founder of the Raikes Foundation, will be in conversation with Ethics in Society Program Director Rob Reich. He will discuss the work of the Gates Foundation, as well as the role of philanthropy in democracy and in seeking global social impact. He will also share his perspective on the ethics of adopting different philanthropic models, the importance of partnerships, the difference between impact and outcomes, and the work of the Raikes Foundation.

Jeff Raikes is the chief executive officer of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and he leads the foundation's efforts to promote equity for all people around the world. Before joining the foundation, he was a member of Microsoft's senior leadership team, which sets overall strategy and direction for the company. Raikes was president of the Microsoft Business Division and oversaw the Information Worker, Server & Tools Business and Microsoft Business Solutions groups. He previously served as group vice president of the Worldwide Sales and Support Group, where he was responsible for providing strategic leadership for Microsoft's sales, marketing, and service initiatives. Before that, he served as senior vice president of Microsoft North America. Raikes joined Microsoft in 1981 as a product manager, and was promoted to director of applications marketing in 1984. He was the chief strategist behind the company's success in graphical applications for the Apple Macintosh and the Microsoft Windows operating system and the creation of the Microsoft Office suite of productivity applications. Before joining Microsoft, he was a software development manager at Apple Computer Inc. Raikes holds a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering-economic systems from Stanford University. He and his wife Tricia are the founders of the Raikes Foundation.

Rob Reich is Associate Professor of Political Science and, by courtesy, in Philosophy and at the School of Education. He is a faculty Co-Director of the Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society and the Director of the Program in Ethics in Society. His main interests are in political theory and he is currently completing a book on ethics, public policy, and philanthropy. He is the author of "Bridging Liberalism and Multiculturalism in American Education," co-author of "Democracy at Risk: How Political Choices Undermine Citizen Participation," and co-editor of "Toward a Humanist Justice: The Political Philosophy of Susan Moller Okin."  Reich is the recipient of several teaching awards, including the Phi Beta Kappa Undergraduate Teaching Award and the Walter J. Gores Award, Stanford University.
