Sahar Akhtar / Political Theory Workshop

SAHAR AKHTAR, ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF PHILOSOPHY, UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

Sahar Akhtar is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at the University of Virginia, where she teaches courses in political philosophy, bioethics, and ethics and economics.

Her main research interests are in political philosophy, especially on the topics of migration, membership, and identity.  She also does some work on ethical issues concerning animal welfare and in areas of philosophy that intersect with economics.

Prior to joining UVA, she was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Political Theory Project at Brown University while completing a PhD in philosophy from Duke University.  Before that, she received a PhD in economics from George Mason University.

The Political Theory Workshop offers faculty and other scholars an opportunity to present "in progress" or recently completed work to a diverse audience from political science, philosophy, law, and other social sciences and humanities.  Workshop papers come from all areas of political theory, including normative and positive theory, legal theory, and the history of political thought.  Papers are circulated ten days before the seminar. Participants are expected to read the paper before the workshop.  Each session begins with comments and questions on the paper by a discussant, a brief response from the author, followed by a general discussion.
