Alexander Martin Mussgnug
Dr. Alexander Martin Mussgnug is an Interdisciplinary Ethics Fellow at the McCoy Center for Ethics in Society and Apple University. As a philosopher working in technology ethics and the philosophy of science, he investigates the implications of AI for science and society. In technology ethics, his current work advocates for the importance of moral exemplars in fostering ethical technological practice. In the philosophy of science, his scholarship focuses on the proliferation of AI in the social sciences and, especially, in development economics.
Before coming to Stanford, he completed his PhD at the University of Edinburgh’s Centre for Technomoral Futures under the supervision of Shannon Vallor, Sabina Leonelli, and Alistair Issac. He also holds an MA in Bioethics, Technology Ethics, and Science Policy from Duke University, as well as a BS in Economics from the University of Konstanz. Dr. Mussgnug’s studies and research have been supported by the Baillie Gifford PhD Studentship in AI Ethics, the Duke Science and Society Leadership Award, and a Fulbright Scholarship. In addition to his academic scholarship, he has professional experience as a data scientist in retail, automotive, and banking.
